The medical mission site initiated in 1950 by the now sainted Rev. Henry and Mary Esther Otten. Wandoor is a rural
area in southern Malabar where the people are mostly small farmers and
shopkeepers in villages. The Ottens established a rural dispensary
that later became a sixty-bed hospital with the help of the Lutheran Women's
Missionary League. It is named "Karunalaya," which means "Abode of
Mercy."
