WANDOOR
The medical mission site initiated in 1950 by
the now sainted Rev. Henry and Mary Esther Otten.

Wandoor is a rural area in southern Malabar where the people are mostly small farmers and shopkeepers in villages.  The Ottens established a rural dispensary that later became a sixty-bed hospital with the help of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.  It is named "Karunalaya," which means "Abode of Mercy."
.
Along with the medical work, a determined evangelistic program was conducted in the entire area.  That work continues today, on a mature basis, led by senior leaders.  Rev. P. G. Henry, the pastor, is also president of the Malabar Mission Circle.  His congregation conducts its services in a fine, recently-enlarged chapel on the mission hospital compound.  The evangelistic program includes outreach in the Tiruvali area, twelve kilometres from Wandoor, where there are three preaching stations.  The MMS supports the salary of the evangelist, currently Mr. Richard.  It also provides supplementary help to Rev. Henry to enable him to carry out his outreach program in other areas.
.
The hospital is under the direction of Dr. J. C. Vijayan, a highly-qualified and experienced surgeon.  The MMS has assisted the hospital with medicines, a solar-heat hot water system, and an intercom system to share devotions with patients.  Several of the staff, including Mr. Reynold Frederick, Mr. C. R. George and Mr. O. Appukuttan, have served the combined medical-evangelistic programs for over forty years.  Mr. Appukuttan has also been instrumental in establishing the Otten Memorial English Medium School on the mission compound, a highly successful elementary and high school with about 500 students and 30 teachers.  It has now reached tenth grade in its development program.
