Kannur is a large old port city in North Malabar, situated on the shore of the Indian Ocean about 20 kilometres from Naduvil.  It was formerly called Cannanore.

In 2001 the Malabar Gospel workers rented the second floor of a new building to serve as a student library and reading room centre called "The Open Door," with the special purpose of reaching male students and youth.  At The Open Door they carry on a varied program to attract the public, including song programs and a lecture series.  A large number of books and a TV-VCR have been purchased, though more are needed.  The Open Door is a ministry supported by a three-year grant from St. Armands Key Lutheran Church in Sarasota, Florida through the MMS.

In 2004 a pilot project designed to reach female students and youth, "The Open Door–Vanitha" was funded by a two-year total grant of US$15,000 received from the Florida-based Zimmer Family Foundation.  Vanitha (vanida) means women.  This is a parallel program to The Open Door.  It is located directly opposite the Government Women's College and right beside a Women's Parallel College.  A copy of every required textbook has been provided, as are reference books, and general as well as Christian literature.  Two computers have generously been provided by one of the 2004 tour participants.  These will enable Internet access to strengthen the study possibilities.
